In 1946, Roman F. Arnoldy founded the company as a remanufacturer of pump parts for the oil industry. As it grew, the company gradually expanded into areas of general welding and machining with emphasis on alloy steels. The founding name of the company was the Texas Alloy Products Company ("TAPCO"). The demand for an improvement in the welded hardfacing that was used to resurface working parts led Mr. Arnoldy in 1961, following considerable R&D, to introduce the then new, patented process for hardfacing called Bulkwelding. This established the company as a market innovator and leader in welded chrome/iron hardfacings.
From the sixties, TAPCO had applied their Bulkweld process to the manufacture of wear-resistant overlayed steel plate and in 1975, a separate Overlay Division was established. Subsequently, this became a stand-alone subsidiary called Overlay Product Systems, Inc. ("OPS"), which has grown and developed into what is now known as the Alloy Products Group ("APG"). Today, APG applies proprietary weld coatings to sheets of mild steel and other substrates producing a range of standard, abrasion resistant steel sheet, which can be sold in plate form or fabricated into custom components.
Through the years these hardfacings were applied to many products including valves for the oil refining industry. In the early 70's, a group within the company developed a then revolutionary valve for that industry. This gave the company its second major product line, which it later developed into a main operating subsidiary, manufacturing these valves directly.
From early in its history the company was international in its interests. In the late 70's a repair facility was established in Spain, and later moved to the UK. Joint ventures were established with a Swiss company, and technical licenses were established in various strategic areas of the world.
In 1980, the company sold the valve division and the name TAPCO to the General Signal Corporation of Stamford, Connecticut and was renamed Triten Corporation. In 1986, Triten bought TAPCO back from General Signal.
The 80's were a decade of challenge, with the industrial restructuring that was taking place in many developed regions of the world. Product lines in the Triten's major operating subsidiaries continued to develop and increasing attention was placed on a broadening of the product offerings. In 1989, the founder, Roman F. Arnoldy, passed the Chief Executive title to his son (then President), John S. Arnoldy. As with all changes of management, the focus of the company began to shift. Heavy emphasis was placed on geographical as well as product line expansion and, after putting restructuring and other challenges behind it, Triten began a period of significant growth.
In 1993, the company purchased the Vidaplate Ltd. company in England to enhance its UK position. Since then the company has purchased another UK engineering company, Trimay Ltd. and built a state-of-the-art manufacturing complex in South Yorkshire, England. Opening in late 1998, all three UK companies were moved into this facility and the businesses consolidated.
In 1996, Triten formed a new engineering subsidiary, the International Alliance Group ("IAG"), to develop and execute efficiency enhancement projects for certain key oil company refining units. Showing significant success in its first years of operation, IAG is positioned to take advantage of oil companies' ongoing outsourcing of key services.
Today, Triten Corporation consists of two main operating subsidiaries:
The original company has become the Alloy Products Group of Triten Corporation. Consisting of Overlay Product Systems ("OPS"), Triten Corporation Canada, Triten International Ltd., Trimay Engineering, and Vidaplate Ltd., the company does business in over 50 countries. Alloy Products Group ("APG") utilizes direct sales and marketing as well as agents and representatives around the world. Manufacturing and distribution points are located in Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA. A broad range of engineering and fabrication services compliments its extensive range of hard metal coatings and welding consumables. APG is the market leader in its sector, and is the largest applicator of hardfacings in the world.
The International Alliance Group ("IAG"), the company's newest subsidiary, was incorporated in 1995 and completed its first contract in 1996. Concentrating on cat cracking, catalytic reforming, and gasoline conversion units, IAG has been able to deliver extremely high value added upgrades to modernize and significantly enhance efficiencies and internal rates of return for its oil company customers.
