Computing has become an essential tool in our daily lives, our work environments and in essentially all academic disciplines. The growth in the past decade in both computing technology and applications has been phenomenal. The information highway has arrived at our doorstep, giving us instant access to galleries, museums, research institutes, scenic drives, solar system images, entertainment, educational materials, and research results from all over the globe. The wide availability of computing ranging from the desktop through super computers has produced new solution strategies in many areas of science and engineering and many other diverse application areas. Computer Science is clearly a corner stone of the information technology age we all live in.
The Department of Computer Science was founded in the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1980. Prior to that Computer Science courses had been offered through the Department of Mathematics since the university's inception in 1963. M.Sc. degrees were first offered in 1971 and a B.Sc. in Computer Science was first offered in 1975.
The formal Ph.D. program was approved in 1988. The Department moved into a new office building in 1990, and the adjacent laboratory building housing all of the Department's teaching and research labs opened in 1995. The Computer Science Department and the Engineering & Computer Science/Math Co-op moved into the new, state-of-the-art, green Engineering/Computer Science Building in May 2006.
